Edwin Alexander Anderson Papers, 1878-1939

Edwin Alexander Anderson (1860-1933) of Wilmington, N.C., was an officer in the United States Navy. The collection contains the personal correspondence and official naval papers of Edwin Alexander Anderson. The personal correspondence consists of letters written to his mother and to his wife, Mertie Lorain Anderson. Letters to Anderson's mother, 1883-1887, include detailed descriptions of the cities and residents of the ports Anderson visited, as well as his life and duties in the navy. The letters to Mertie Lorain Anderson, 1888-1927, are primarily personal, but also include descriptions of Anderson's duties, his experiences during the Spanish-American War, and their respective family genealogies. There are no items dated 1903-1911, and little material regarding World War 1. Official papers include letters about Anderson's assignments, orders, recommendations, travel permits, and commendations. Also included are reports, military writings, call records and logs of Anderson while commander of the Asiatic Fleet, and documents relieving Anderson of active duty with the Navy in 1924.
